Home Made Apple Cider Donuts |
The sky is grey and the ground is white. The trees are bare their branches covered in a thick layer of snow. The forest is quiet out back, and I can smell the snow mingling with the rocks and trees that line the pathways through the woods. The chickens for once, are quiet hiding in their house, even the goats are quiet and declining to leave their shelter which too is covered in a layer of white. So far there is little wind and just recently the snow switched to a very small amount of freezing rain that will cause everything to ice over. The country quiet that falls with the snow is a bit unnerving.... I am not used to it yet. But there is an untainted beauty to the white world outside that you just don't get in the city.
Inside, I have been doing what chores I can. I had guests for the B&B last night, a lovely couple with international leanings, young, and very friendly. Today they are headed out into the snow to see what they will manage to accomplish we wish them luck but I suspect they will be home early due to the snow. Inside, the dogs are curled up napping, a warm fire warms the house, and breakfast is on the table.
Today, when I looked outside it looked so much like New England because of the snow that I had to make something rather traditional and New Englandy for breakfast. All my ingredients were local and all natural or organic.... And I cooked us up some Apple Cinnamon Donuts, so when my guests came down these delicious breakfast treats were on the table and the coffee was hot and ready to serve. My husband too enjoyed the morning yums.
There is something special about baking during a snow storm. I am not quite sure what it is, but I always seem to do it.... I like the way the warm apple cinnamon smell keeps the fragrance of icy cold forest outside, allowing my home to be a warm comfortable haven away from the cold and wet.
We have a few extra donuts, want one?
