A Breakfast At Wildflower Farm |
Not everyone is good at running a B&B. It isn't the hardest or easiest job on earth. It is a simple job. Keep things, clean, maintain some sort of web presence, Work regularly on behavior with the pets in the house, you must be a people person able to play nice with everyone even when you don't agree with their world view. You must enjoy a good discussion, even when it becomes a bit controversial. Sometimes biting your own tongue a bit is part of the job. You must be available for check in and to provide assistance to your guests both within the house as well as being able to answer their questions and be helpful about what is in your area to be seen. Not only must the guest rooms be clean always, the whole house must be as guests enjoy the public areas, reading books by the wood stove, watching their favorite show in the living room etc. Also some care must be given to the outside as well, keeping it somewhat neat, maintaining the walk in the winter making sure to salt. All this, in addition to running the farm so that the animals are living comfortably also. Early mornings are a regular thing. Late nights can on occasion be a thing as well.
Most larger B&Bs will have a small apartment for the inn keeper. We have a max of 2 rentable bedrooms, so in our case, this is just a single family home that we run as a B&B. More than about 2 or 3 rentable rooms becomes such a job that often people find themselves hiring professional cleaners between each guest and it eats up profits or raises the price so high that most people have trouble affording it. At our place, I do nearly all the cleaning myself with a bit of help from my husband who has a couple token house chores. We have our bedroom set a bit apart with it's own attached bathroom. However there is only one kitchen in the building which we use for our private needs as well as our B&B needs. Many people would find it intrusive to have strangers walking through their kitchen all the time.... I am a bit different that way. I grew up in a Buddhist commune in Central Square Cambridge in MA. So for me if I am sharing my kitchen or having less than oh 30 people walk through it a day other than me, I tend to feel very relaxed and at ease and not the least bit invaded. Running a B&B is fun. It exposes you to interesting people from a wide range of international cultures. You may find your perspective tested at times, but your mind is constantly growing more and more open.
Running a B&B is as big a job as running the small farm in our backyard and really isn't for everyone. This is just my day to day stuff. I haven't even begun to discuss the business aspect yet or the expenses. I hope over time to share more about life running a B&B To book a stay with us, go visit Wildflower Farm on AirBnB.
