Deer In The Front Yard

When I first began telling my family that we were going to buy this place, they said, that it is a lovely dream but it is in the middle of nowhere. They said, it would be lonely. I told them I was fine with that after all my years of living as an international gypsy. What I have found though, is, they couldn't have been more wrong. I am rarely lonely here. We have so very many guests. From day time visitors that are dear old friends just glad to have us back in the state, to family who stay a night here and there, to family from Finland who were just here for a month! In addition to all that, we have the dog trainer who comes to work with the dog weekly, fabulous neighbors on all sides, and every week for Cafe Primrose, I have a part time assistant out here. Then there are all the Bed and Breakfast guests....

We love our B&B guests, they have nearly all been beautiful visitors. Many have come with their husbands, wives, and or children. I have to say, since I have no children and at nearly 35, I love our child guests the most. I have so much fun walking the goats around the yard with them and collecting eggs from the chickens with their help. It is really nice to be able to share a place that is so full of wonder for me, with others who view it with wonder as well.

Other B&B guests I really enjoy are the creative types. it is always fun to talk shop. I too am highly creative and I am almost always making something which is how the Cafe Primrose gift shop, blog, and Etsy shop came to be. I love watching painters paint outside in the sun, or to hang out with the hippie types traveling with their guitars..... I love their passion for the arts and all things creative.

I also love the people who stay who are activists out there trying to save the world. One of the reasons we came to settle here, is because of global warming and our desire to change the way we are living. We are far from perfect earth citizens but we are always happy to learn how to do better from such guests. And we are doing far better here than we ever have in the past.

I enjoy the interesting philosophical types. I am all for a good discussion on any number of subjects. I grew up on them in the commune I lived in as a child.

I love scientist guests! There is soooo much to learn and they have such a huge amount to teach and to share. I am constantly reading and studying interesting subjects in biological science. And, this place is a haven for scientists seeing as my husband is a PhD in physics from Helsinki university, a good science chat always goes over well here.

But, perhaps my favorite guests are the wild deer, the foxes, and coyotes that on occasion come right up to the house. The wildness all around never fails to take my breath away and it fills me with a sense of awe at just how stupid my chickens truly are. So, they see something, another animal, a large animal, a little ways off down the long drive, they decide to go in a big collective group to say, "hello," to it, completely oblivious to the fact that it could be a predator that eats chickens. Still, it never fails. And lucky for them, our most common wild animal guest would be the deer.

It sounds I know, like I am very active and always chatting with my guests, truth is I am here to give everyone a warm welcome and to answer any questions they have about the house and the area. Anything beyond that, is up to them to initiate as I would never wish to intrude on their privacy.
